Painting Leather Stage-by-stage

I've been watching a lot (and I mean a LOT) of Joy of Painting with Bob Ross recently, while painting my Khorne. Those of you that have watched this program will be very familiar with the intro format. With this in mind, I'm going to run the colours along the bottom of the screen so you can paint along.

Introduction.
I have created these guides to give you a few ideas for painting your models to a decent gaming standard.

Years of working at Games Workshop, and playing in tournaments have taught me that your models need at least one highlight on top of the base colour.  Where possible I have got two highlights, which really make the details stand out.

Some areas, such as flesh, usually need more than one highlight to look effective, but there are some tricks that can produce fantastic results, in a fraction of the time.

The guide below gives you a quick and effective way of painting leather straps and boots - usually the most laborious part of a model!

Stage 1 - Paint all the areas with Army Painter Chocolate Brown

Stage 2 - Paint all the areas with Army Painter Smoke. This is a very thick ink wash (it's not an ink, and I wouldn't use it as a base colour either)

Stage 3 - Paint the egdes of the straps and boots with Army Painter Chocolate Brown

Stage 4 - Paint the extreme highlights with Army Painter Flat Earth. When you first apply the paint it looks far too bright. Once it dries it darkens slightly.

You could add a Stage 3.5 and apply a 50/50 mix of Chocolate Brown and Flat Earth.  Because thee guides are meant to get you painted and gaming, this option is entirely up to you.

Next Up: Painting Red.

  1. Those colours are Vallejo Model Colour, not Army Painter.
