Odyssey Kickstarter Unboxing from JoeK - Argonauts and more!

It's unboxing time once again! Earlier in the week I had a nice box full of resin turn up from JoeK Minis' Odyssey Argonauts Kickstarter -

Before stepping through the drop, this one is fairly picture heavy. You've been warned!

For those unfamiliar with it, JoeK's Odyssey range mashes Greek mythology with Cyberpunk which gives off a unique blend of ancient, hi-tech men and monsters. There have been several releases in the range prior to the Kickstarter - here are prior unboxings of a couple - Jason and Atalanta, but the focus today is on the above bundle.

Said bundle contains: 5 Argonauts in 4 poses, Jason (again! - he was in the pledge. That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it.), The Last Stand (A damaged Argonaut in a little display pose), Achilles, 3 Cyclops Scouts and the reason for the slightly delayed pledge (most pledges went out quite a while ago) - Poseidon.

Also in the pledge was the rather cool scrap book, which shows off a little backstory for each piece, some development artwork and some of Joe's thoughts. It has a nice shiny black finish, which instantly attracts fingerprints!

Time to get to some resin. The focus of the campaign was on the Argonauts. There are 4 poses, all with interchangable weapons, shoulder pads, heads with optional extras like gauntlet lasers. They're fairly chunky chaps, with the poses fitting onto 40mm lipped bases.

Boyband dance pose - check.

Ooh, Arc Reactor.

The Weapon options. Shields, Spear/Halberds, Swords and Boxing Gloves/Massive Fists.

The rest of the gear for the Argonauts - Shoulder Pads, Gauntlet Blades/Blasters and Heads!

I think it's fair to say at this point that the level of detail is incredible, and the quality of the casting matches that level. I didn't spot any casting issues such as bubbles or mold slips while taking photos and they have a nice matte texture, which would indicate either minimal release agent or they've already had some cleaning work done on them. Either way, it'll still be bath time when I get around to building them.

Moving on now to the other minis.

First up is The Last Stand. This depicts an Argonaut valiantly fighting to the last, having already suffered a good deal of damage - chipped away plates, scored shield, you get the drift. A lovely display piece, and one that is exclusive to Kickstarter and any shows you find Joe selling at. In fact, it just says KS/Show exclusive so if you know Joe is going to a show anyway, he might have a couple on him!

The Cyclops Scouts. This trio are bipedal beasties, each with their own unique pose and base. They power themselves along on massive clawed arms, which make them ideal for scouting over rough terrain but not so much for fighting I'd say - it's be like standing on one leg with an arm tied behind your back!

I will note that there was a difference about the Cyclops set compared to the rest of the models. Joe used a few casters through the project to keep minis flowing in at a steady rate rather than slowing each other down in a queue, and while, as mentioned above, the Argonauts have a nice matte feel to them, the Cyclops' are quite shiny and slick. Not quite to the "I need a shower now I've touched this" level of grease that some of the models from the recent Raging Heroes kickstarter have but there is a definite difference between the two sets. The shine isn't massively noticable in the pictures (moreso on the flatter of the bases), and as all resin needs washing before assembly and priming anyway, it's not a problem.

Next up we have Achilles, he of Heel and Last Stand fame.

He's got himself a mechanical leg and, armed with a couple of punch daggers, he's going to cause people some problems.

You get a couple of basing choices with him. The first is a larger base, depicting him standing on a fallen Cyclops, while the second has him standing upon a broken pillar.

Last, but most definitely not least, is Poseidon. He's a beast of a miniature, towering over poor Jason and that's before he's put on his scenic base topper depicting a rolling wave.

Poseidon is quite a mechanical looking monster, which is balanced out by the natural (if tentaclly and slightly icky) look of the cloak, complete with the rest of his hair.

The swishy cloak definitely looks the part.

The trident is also slightly more organic looking, more grown than forged.

The quality across all the models is superb and the Kickstarter has done a grand job of bulking out the Odyssey line, including some sneaky looks at stuff still to come inside the scrapbook. Everything is going away in the cupboard though until I can work out how I want to paint them!

If you like what you see and didn't get in on the Kickstarter, Joe says that everything (bar the Event only Last Stand) is "Coming Soon" to his webstore - which you can find currently acting as a pledge manager here, while you can keep up to date with the Odyssey range and other musings from Joe through the JoeK Minis Facebook page, which is here.

  2. Nice review! The models are a bit hit and miss for me, but I really love the overall look. Poseidon is probably one of my favs so far.
